FAQ’s
We’ve got the answers
How long does it take to become a ski instructor?
You can become a ski instructor in weeks if you’re an experienced skier. Most level one and two ski instructor courses are about ten weeks long. The Level two qualification is often the lowest ski instructor qualification accepted by ski schools. So while you’re technically a qualified ski instructor with just your level one, you’ll likely find it harder to get work.
Your ski instructor training doesn’t stop there though. The best ski instructors will continue training towards the level three or level four qualifications and this is the best way to make a career in snow sports.
See a full guide on becoming a ski instructor for more details.
What qualifications do you need to be a ski instructor?
Is it hard to become a ski instructor?
Yes and No. With the right support, training and a little time, most skiers could achieve the level-one ski instructor qualification. With these qualifications, you can teach beginners and children the basics of skiing and are a ski instructor.
However, if you plan on making a career in Snowsports, you’ll want to continue your instructor training until you’re at least a level three instructor. The skill required to achieve your level three is exponentially higher than that required to achieve your level one or two and it is a challenging qualification.
Will you get a job after the ski instructor course?
Possibly, every student has the opportunity to interview to join our instructor team. In order to be offered a job, you need to be successful in the interview, have successfully passed your BASI Level 2 and have the right to work in Switzerland. Successful candidates will definitely get work in the peak weeks, Christmas, Half-Term and Easter.
How much is a ski instructor course
Our most popular 10-week ski instructor courses start at £8000. However, this is just one way to become a ski instructor. Depending on where you want to work, your skill level, and a few other factors, you can start your ski instructor training for less.
Our team are available to take you through all the options and find a program that is the perfect fit for you.
Can you join a Ski Instructor Course as a career break?
A ski instructor course can be a rewarding career break. Nothing beats skiing every day and it is a great way to spend the winter season. If you want to ski every day but don’t want to become a ski instructor, we also have Off-Piste and Performance courses which could be a good fit.
How much do you get paid as a ski instructor?
As with all jobs, your pay increases as you progress through your career, gain more experience and get higher-level qualifications.
In Europe, pay for a level two instructor varies between 15 and €25 an hour. You can often earn a little more in Switzerland, but the cost of living is also higher.
Once fully qualified to level four or equivalent, you can earn Fr.60 an hour in Switzerland or up to €70 an hour in France. The hourly rate in Austria is a little lower, but there are lots of other benefits which offset this.
See our full guide on how much you get paid as a ski instructor for more details.
Do you need to speak a second language?
The course will be primarily run in English so you don’t need to speak a second language. However, the better your language skills the easier it will be to find work immediately after the course and in the future.
What Qualifications do our coaches have?
Our coaches are all fully qualified instructors. We use a mixture of BASI trainers and specialist coaches to prepare you for your exams fully. You’ll also spend time shadowing other BASI instructors.
How good do you need to be to join the course?
Skiers should be able to make linked short turns on a steep red in a 3-metre-wide corridor. You should be comfortable on all marked pistes and have done a little off-piste.
Do you need to be able to Snowboard?
No. For your BASI Level 1 or 2, you only need to worry about skiing. Most BASI instructors will also learn to snowboard as you have to do a 2nd discipline as part of your BASI level 3.
Need skis and boots?
Here’s our guide on which boots to buy.
We often get asked which boots we recommend, and we’re happy to say we’ve partnered up with Nordica to give you an exclusive New Gen discount on skis and boots. Book a place on one of our courses to receive the discount code. We’ll get them delivered directly to the Alps for you!

We have a number of accommodation options for our ski instructor courses. Depending on your budget, you can choose from chalets in the centre of town that are within walking distance of the bars, restaurants and main lift stations. Or you can stay further down the mountain. This is where most of our team lives and is a little more affordable but still linked to the main lift system.
If you’ve not experienced the ‘ski season way of living’, the accommodation can be a bit of a surprise. You’ll be staying in twin rooms (upgrades are available), and while the apartments are warm, dry and comfortable, they’re quite cosy (small). Please see the photos below for more details.
